Description
Residence of Simon Fitch Barstow in San Rafael, California. Barstow purchased the Marin County Journal from Jerome A. Barney in 1870, then ran the newspaper until five years before his death in 1902. This illustration is from a brochure titled San Rafael Illustrated and Described, published by W.W. Elliott & Co., in 1884. The brochure shows images of early San Rafael and was designed as a promotional piece, meant to attract new residents and investors to Marin County's most populous town. The original lithographs were made from the sketches of Mr. Chris Jorgensen, a teacher at the San Francisco Art School and noted artist.
