Great Britain Wales Cardiff: Cardiff castle is built about a hollow square in the center of which stands the old Norman stone fort - a polygonal "keep" which was built sometime in the 13th Century to replace a wooden structure built by earlier Normans and destroyed by an attacking Welsh ruler. the Norman forts were built upon ruins of an old Roman fort built here around 74 A.D., which ruins form the foundation of the hill the present fort crowns. Since the middle of 1948 the castle has been the property of Cardiff City Council, and is to be used for local public purposes and for the benefit of the citizens of Cardiff. Its broad lawns surrounding the old "keep" are a great place for basking in the sun
