Description
In full operation by 1923, the old Don Pedro Dam was built through the combined efforts of the Turlock and Modesto Irrigation Districts and was sited on the Tuolumne River northeast of Turlock, California. Visible is released irrigation water spilling down the face of the 284-foot-high dam through twelve ports. This release would have been in excess of the water that flowed through five lower outlets leading to the water-wheels of the powerhouse visible below. The electricity generated in the powerhouse was sold by the Turlock Irrigation District directly to retail customers and it became the first irrigation district in California to do so.
