Description
Seventeen years prior to the formation of Madera County, the California Lumber Company built a log flume to carry lumber from its lumber operations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Central Pacific Railroad, located in Madera. Thus, when the County was organized in 1893, it was appropriately named Madera, which is the Spanish term for wood. The granite jail was built in 1876 and was the one of the oldest jails in California when torn down (ca. 1990). During the time in which these records were kept, W.B. Thurman was Sheriff, succeeding his Father, W.H. Thurman, who was the First Sheriff of Madera County. The scrapbook contains 140 pages and is comprised mainly of felony Reward, Stolen and Wanted notices mainly from counties located throughout California and some from Counties within the United States. Of Note: There are a few Notices from Whittier State School, which was located in Whittier, California. The March 11, 1889 Act of the California Legislature authorized the establishment of a school for juvenile offenders and was officially opened as 'Whittier State School' for boys and girls on July 1, 1891. Notices are in the form of postcards, printed flyers, and written letters. There are a number of circulars from detective agencies; Pinkerton National Detective Agency and Harry N. Morse. Also included in the Album are several "Description of Prisoners To Be Discharged from California State Prison at Folsom", along with a photo of the prisoner being described.
