Description
The California Nursery Company sold palms, roses, ornamentals trees and shrubs, and fruit trees from 1884 to 1971. The nursery imported plants, propagated plants, sold domestically and abroad. The owners were prominent horticulturalists: John Rock 1884-1904, George C. Roeding 1917-1928, and George C. Roeding, Jr. 1928-1972. The nursery provided plants for world's fairs, industrial, residential, government projects. They provided nursery stock to gardens like Hearst Castle, Filoli, and the state Capital. They provided fruit trees for commercial growers and homeowners. The nursery evolved from selling nursery stock to additionally providing landscape services during the 1920's. Photo of the 'Peace' rose girl (Betty Vandenburg) in front of the 'Old Adobe'. 1946 was the year that the 'Peace' rose was introduced. The Roeding family made sure that a 'Peace' rose was presented to the head of each delegation at the first United Nations meeting in San Francisco.
