Carte du Fond des Oceans. 12 Years of Scientific Coring Operations. One of the major scientific endeavors managed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been the Deep Sea Drilling Project funded by the National Science Foundation. Coring operations started in 1968 with the ship Glomar Challenger. Since then, cores have been recovered from over 540 sites and made available for scientific investigations, both on-board ship and through repositories for the cores
