Description
The remarkable soccer ball-like structure of coated vesicles is revealed through negative staining, and the inset panel shows a candidate model of the lattice structure. Coating of vesicles is important for shaping, packaging, sorting, and transporting the vesicle and its contents. In this preparation, coated vesicles were isolated from homogenized guinea pig brain tissue. Both upper and lower panels labeled A, B are from Kanaseki and Kadota (1969) J. Cell Biol. 42:202-220, reprinted with permission in Chapter 2 (Specializations of the Free Surface) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. as Figure 59 (upper panels, magnification, 300,000X), and Fig 60 A & B (magnification, 400,000X). Fig. 60 C & D are courtesy of T. Roth, and show the same image before (C) and after (D) photographic enhancement using Markam rotation. A PDF copy of the accompanying chapter is available on the ASCB's BioEDUCATE website.
