Description
Performing Arts (including Performance Art)
Sculpture and Installations
From June 1 to July 5, 1997, Francis Alys traveled from Tijuana to San Diego without crossing the US-Mexico border by circumnavigating the globe. His project, The Loop, took him from his starting point at the border fence in Tijuana, to the same point on the border fence in San Diego. Stopping in places such as Australia, China, and Canada, Alys documented the trip through email, journal entries, photographs, and mementos found along the way. Alys stated that his project was an investigation of the verbal, visual, and bicultural, and was to remain independent from any critical implications and conclusions beyond the physical displacement of the artist. This documentation, as well as a series of postcards created by the artist during his travels, was displayed at the CECUT during the public phase of inSITE97. --inSITE97
