In 1962 Applied Oceanography Group (AOG) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography leased this DC-3 airplane ("N28C" identifying numbers shown on the side of plane in this photo). Later the plane would be given to them for continued research; AOG then mounted a infrared radiometer to measure heat flow from the ocean in the plane. With the airplane it was possible to survey 10,000 square miles of sea surface in 24 hours. Circa 1965
