"This is a group of men going to pay for a 'bride'. The 'Bride' has, however, as is the custom here, been married for any number of years but has at least produced one live child who is now at least 5-8 years old and more likely than not she also has a son (this being much more important) who is somewhere in the same age range. The payment here, at cost, is probably worth 500.00 which is expensive for the highlands but about 1/4 of what is payed on the coast." MSS187, Box 44, Folder 9.
