Description
Figure 415 from Chapter 16 (Cytoplasmic matrix and cytoskeleton) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. Longitudinal section of a Km fiber in a partially contracted Stentor coerulus. Ribbons of microtubules diverge laterally to insert into the basal bodies of closely spaced cilia. In contrast, the basal bodies would be farther apart and the number of overlapping ribbons would be much reduced in a fully extended cell (not shown). From Huang and Pitelka, J. Cell Biol. 57:704-728, 1973 (PMID:4633444). A PDF copy of the accompanying chapter is available on the ASCB’s BioEDUCATE website.
