Description
"Pancho" (Florence Lowe) Barnes casually sits sidewise in the cockpit of a plane, a cigarette between the fingers of the hand resting on her knee; the other hand holds a worn and folded piece of paper, likely a map. She wears a collared shirt and tie under a flight jacket, cuffed pants, low boots, and a pilot's cap with goggles. A very similar image appears in "Girls train for air derby," Los Angeles Times, 20 Jul. 1931: A1. The article announces that several women pilots have begun to train for the women's annual air derby.
