Mrs. Beatrice Vennum at her home in Los Angeles. Her daughter, Lillian "Lalla" Vennum, is in the foreground, but her image is blurred and scratched out. Lalla told police she was attacked by members of the K.K.K. and her arm was "branded" with a cross. The attack also involved links to her ex-boyfriend.
Related to Los Angeles Times article, "Seek Clew In Girl Branding; Police Hunt Hooded Pair of Mutilators; Fiery Cross Burned Into Flesh of Arm; K.K.K. Warnings Followed by Attack." 29 Jan., 1926: pg. A10.
Handwritten on negative: Mrs. Vennum. [Lillian "Lalla" Vennum is scratched out.]
Text from negative sleeve: Vennum Mrs. Lalla [Lalla is short for Lillian and refers to MISS Vennum, not Mrs.]
Text from newspaper caption: Victim and Her Mother, Above -- Miss Lolia [sic] Vennum and below, Mrs. Vennum.
