In 1933, about ten years after the Dam was completed, the city started building what was known as a “psychological dam” -- made of dirt and gravel -- on the opposite side of the reservoir in order to appease residents’ safety concerns. A different photograph taken on the same occasion appears with the article, “Hollywood Dam backed By Barrier,” Los Angeles Times, 28 Dec 1933: A1 A utility truck lowers dirt and gravel into the ravine on the opposite side of the Hollywood Dam.
