Text from negative sleeve: 3080. Helen Hay, Left, Richard Rankin, Right. Eats Giant Hamburger. 11/30/35. [Stamped:] Dec 11 1935.
Text from newspaper caption: Hamburger Champ in Action: When Richard Rankin eats a hamburger, it IS a hamburger. Here is Rankin, 280-pound student of Fullerton Junior College consuming his giant hamburger as Helen Hay looks on in awe. Rankin daily at lunch time consumes one of these special two-bit tidbits containing half a pound of meat, half of an onion and enough bun to make a pig. At the present rate by end of school year he will have consumed nine quarts of pickles, twenty-two pounds of onions, five lugs of tomatoes, two and a quarter pounds of mustard, three-fourths of a crate of lettuce, five cases of pop and ninety pounds of hamburger. Rankin tops off each noon day repast with six doughnuts and a quart of milk. [Los Angeles Times, 10 Oct. 1935: 14]
