After being delayed by a plane crash Dr. Townsend was finally able to make his speech at the La Crescenta picnic regarding his idea for an old age pension plan.
Dr. Townsend addresses a blurry crowd by speaking into a microphone, holding one hand in his pocket and gesturing with a tight fist with the other.
Similar photograph appears with the headline, "Dr. Townsend's Plane Crashes on Way to Picnic-Bowl Debater Heckled," Los Angeles Times, 19 Aug 1035: 12.
