Photograph of a stretch of railroad tracks for the Southern Pacific Railroad running between Beaumont and Indio near Whitewater. The tracks extend from the bottom right and up along the right edge where they eventually disappear near the horizon. Smoke from a train is seen in the distance at center. The tracks are surrounded by low brush in a desert that extends towards mountains in the far distance at left.
Text from negative sleeve: 601. Whitewater, Calif. 1899. Southern Pacific Investigation trip. The track between Beaumont and Indio. Freight trains coming west up the hill to Beaumont. Smoke can be seen from the head engine and the helper on the rear. 3 negatives. Pile driver and construction crew with work train on desert repairing or rebuilding a culvert. 4 negatives
