Mertie stands in profile at center and faces to the left. Zetta stands behind and to the left of her. She looks to the left. A young man stands behind and to the left of Zetta under the tent. Behind Zetta and Mertie, the tent stands, open on the side facing camera. At right, camping gear is visible inside the tent.
According to the provided caption, the man in the background is Forrest Whitaker, Forrest Whitaker would have been about 49 at the time of this photograph. The man in the picture looks younger than that.
