Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Either H. H. West's brother, Guy West, or Franz Nelson took this photograph. Street corner with soldier standing guard. Men at the left and right cross the street. A car drives down the street at the right. The soldier holds a gun and wears a wide-brimmed hat. A woman stands in front of a building holding a baby. The building has a sign on front that reads, "Legal holiday on proclamation of governor." There are other people walking down the street at the left and a man riding a bike at the center. Text from negative sleeve: 978. San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, April 1906. Guy West of Chanslor-Lyon and Franz Nelson agent Diamond Tires went to San Francisco on first train. Took my Kodak. I was Chief Clerk in the Asst. Sup't's office S. P. R. R. Arcade depot, and got necessary permits for them to go in a baggage car with bread. No one was allowed to go to San Francisco without a permit. Martial law in S. F. Bread trains were being made up by L. A. Chamber of Commerce. 1. Taken in Oakland, Calif. just as they got off the train. Martial law. See soldier guard.
