Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of an unknown boy posing in front of San Gabriel Mission while standing in a dirt road. The boy stands left-of-center and looks to the camera with his arms hanging by his sides. He dons a hat and overalls. He stands in the middle of a dirt road that spans the width of the foreground and narrows as it stretches into the distance at right. Behind and to the right of the boy, a horse-drawn carriage travels down the road towards the camera. Behind the boy and the carriage, the south-facing wall of San Gabriel Mission stands. The mission is partially out-of-frame at left and extends into the distance towards the center of the image. The bell tower rises behind the boy at left. Utility poles dot the side of the road along the front of the mission and power lines stretch overhead. Text from negative sleeve: 1182. San Gabriel Mission, about 1896. Do not think any of these persons are of my party, unless we came out in that rig and H.H.Cooper is in front seat. Looks too stout for him. Girls not known in either film. 1. A rig in front of the mission. 2. The old stairway and pepper tree. 3. The mission bells. 4. A Mexican lad at the mission. Another rig in the rear. 4 films
