Photograph of the windmill at Nichols Ranch as viewed from the ranch grounds. In the foreground, tall grasses rise and stretch across the image. Beyond that, large shrubbery stands on dirt ground. The windmill stands, right-of-center, beyond that. Its turbine faces slightly left. A structure stands adjacent to the left of the windmill. Trees stand in the distance.
Text from negative sleeve: 1210. Santa Ana, California, avout [sic] 1899. Nichols Ranch. Fanny Nichols aunt Miss Kate Metrz [sic] and her brother Charles Mertz buy a ranch at Santa Ana. I went down one Sunday and spent the day and took these photos. 1. The ranch house, windmill and drying apricots. 2. The ranch and windmill house. 3. The house, front view, with Aunt Kate Mertz sitting on porch, Fanny standing and Charlie Mertz at right. The hammock under the tree in front. 4. 5. Two pictures of Charlie Mertz and the drying apricots. 6. H.H.West in the watermelon patch with a melon. Poor film. 6 films
