Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of the Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) services held at Los Angeles National Cemetery. In the mid-ground, an obelisk stands atop a low mound, right-of-center. Servicemen surround the monument on 3 sides. Near the left edge of the image, servicemen hold up American flags. They face right, towards the obelisk. In the distance at center, servicemen stand in row and hold firearms; they face towards the camera and obelisk. At right, more servicemen stand and hold flags. They face towards the left. Gravestones and flowering plants occupy the foreground. Hills stand in the far distance. Text from negative sleeve: 1233. Sawtelle, Calif. About 1895. Just commenced to carry a camera. First Fourth of July after I got it I went down to Sawtelle to see the services. No, it was on Decoration Day.
