Mary A. West (Mary Adelbert Teel West Shepard) was H. H. West's first wife and the mother of his children. Frances West (Frances Lucille West Wells) was their daughter.

There are other swimmers in the background and the shore is visible at the right. In the background, the Abbot Kinney Pier is visible with the Ship Café at the far left.
