Oregon Route 51 stretches on an angle from the lower left towards the horizon at center. H. H. West's Buick sits along the right side of the road in the near distance, left-of-center. It is viewed at an angle from the rear as it appears to travel away from the camera (west). Tall grasses line the right side of the road. At right, 2 signs posted on the side of the road read, "ENTERING MONMOUTH," and "OREGON 51." In the distance on the left side of the road, a house stands behind a row of trees that line the road. Text from negative sleeve: 1605. Yellowstone trip 1942. Tuesday, June 30, 1942. 1. Willamette River, from bridge at Salem, Oregon. 2. Entering Monmouth, Oregon. 3. L to R: Otis Hutchinson, brother of Robert Cascade Hutchinson born on Zigzag or Sandy creek in 1853 on Butler train. H.H.West. 4. The old Davidson house near Monmouth. Up in the grove of trees that can be seen at extreme right side of picture, at top of the hill, is the old Davidson Burying Ground, where the Butlers and other members of the Butler train of 1853 are interred. Hutchinson writes cemetery not disturbed by the [army in 194?-3] 4 films. [Note: In all instances of the year date, 1942, the last digit (2) is handwritten over a typed 3.]
