Photograph of the former River Station depot for the Southern Pacific Railroad, viewed from the side, the day before its scheduled demolition. Sotello Street passes across the foreground on a slight angle. The old depot building stands in the near distance and is viewed at an angle from the side. The front of the building faces left and extends out-of-frame at right. A doorway faces camera and is tucked beneath an arch on the left. Two broken windows line the side of the building at right. The front of the building extends back into the image at left. It has an arcaded facade. An entablature stretches above it. North Spring Street (formerly San Fernando Road) stretches back into the image along the left edge. Down North Spring, an elevated walkway rises over the street and extends out-of-frame at left.
Text from negative sleeve: 1960. Los Angeles, California. San Fernando Road - now North Spring St. Taken November 25, 1940. 1. 2. Two pictures from across the rail road tracks of the old Southern Pacific railroad station, and Yardmaster's office. Papers said it was to be torn down so I went down and took a picture of it. 3. A close up of the building from the side toward Los Angeles. -South? - This pictures shows a vacant space between the archway and the two windows at the right. When I came to Los Angeles in 1888, I used to walk past the building, and that vacant space had a big sign: "Chinese Labor Furnished. Sisson & Crocker Company." Nov. 26, 1940 workmen wrecked the building. 3 films.
