Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph, from left to right, of H. H. West, Jr. and a fellow recruit standing in front of their quarters while stationed in Dutch Harbor. A walkway of wooden slats zigzags through the foreground towards a wooden stoop at center in front of the barracks. H. H. West, Jr. and a companion stand on the stoop in the near distance. H. H., Jr. is leftmost. He leans back slightly and props his foot up on wooden stick protruding from the ground while he rests a gun across his leg. His friend stands with legs crossed and rests his hands atop his gun. Both look to the camera while wearing their helmets and uniforms. The front of the Quonset hut stretches directly behind them. It stands in partial view and enters frame at left. It has an arced roof. The Dutch door that the boys stand in front of is partially open. Snow-covered mountains are visible in the far distance at right. Text from negative sleeve: 2006. Fort Mears, Dutch Harbor, Unalaska Island, Alaska, June 1943. 1 and 2.
