Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A high-contrast photograph looking from the west towards the south side of the town square in Red Oak, Iowa. Coolbaugh Street spans the width of the bottom edge and angles back towards the left. Cars are parked, side-by-side, on an angle along the right side of the street; all face away from the camera. Beyond them, buildings line the right side of the street, extending on an angle back towards the left. They are all viewed at an angle from the front and face left. From nearest to furthest, signage identifying the stores and businesses read: "THOMSEN HARDWARE," "DRUG STORE," "F. W. WOOLWORTH CO 5 AND 10 CENT STORE," "[???] CLOTHES SHOP," "[???] BEER," "SEIFEL'S," [some illegible], and "ELLWOOD'S." A written, washed-out caption along the bottom edge reads, "SOUTH SIDE SQUARE RED OAK, IOWA B439." Text from negative sleeve: 2235. Red Oak, Iowa, Nov.22, 1946 1. East Side Square showing the old Rynearson opera house 2. Same, from south side showing Fisher's old grocery store now Spurgeons [sic] 3. Square from corner Coolbaugh st where Hinchman's drug store used to be looking north east 4. Old 2 story building. Left upper room used to be the County Treasurer['s] office when G.M.West was Co.Treas. Lower at that time was wholesale grocery called Morrell's.
