NRHP reference # 78000256 (as part of American Revolution Statuary) According to the negative sleeve, this set of photographs is captured in color. The scans of these images are in black and white. A poorly exposed and out-of-focus photograph of Mertie West posing in front of the statue, "Major General Marquis Gilbert de Lafayette," in Lafayette Square. The park's sidewalk passes across the foreground. At the back edge of the sidewalk, a curb stretches across the image, lining the park's grounds as it bows outward towards camera. Mertie West stands, left-of-center, along the back edge of the sidewalk. She faces slightly right as she looks to the camera. Behind her, the statue of Gilbert de Motier, marquis de Lafayette stands atop a tall pedestal. It is viewed at an angle from the front and the side. Bronze figures and reliefs ornament each side of the square base. The figure of Major General Lafayette stands at the top of the base with outstretched arms. The grounds of Lafayette Square extend across the background. Four punched holes line the bottom left edge. Text from negative sleeve: 2341.
