Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of Mertie West drinking from the Pilgrim Spring fountain which stands outside the Plymouth Post Office Building. A sidewalk stretches along the bottom edge at an angle. The stone fountain stands off-center to the left. It is viewed at an angle from the front, facing slightly left. Atop the fountain, an inscribed tablet rises from the center of the fountain. It reads, "PILGRIM SPRING ON THE MEERSTEAD SET OFF TO ELDER WILLIAM BREWSTER IN THE ORIGINAL ALLOTMENT DECEMBER 1620 ERECTED BY THE TOWN 1915 FREELY DRINK AND QUENCH YOUR [...] HERE DRANK THE PILGRIM FATHERS [...]." Below the tablet, a spigot extends from the front of the fountain's base. Immediately behind and to the right of the fountain, Mertie West hunches over the right end of the fountain and drinks. She stands in profile, facing left. The brick exterior of the Post Office Building stands in partial view along the right half of the image, extending out-of-frame.
