Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. According to the negative sleeve, this photograph was taken in New Orleans. The church standing in the distance is Old North Church in Boston. The Wests visited both Boston and New Orleans during their "Eastern trip" in October, 1947. NRHP reference # 66000776 A poorly-exposed photograph of Mertie West posing on a sidewalk in Boston's North End with Old North Church rising in the background. Mertie West stands in the foreground at left and looks to camera. Behind her, the sidewalk she stands upon stretches down and back towards center. It lines Hull Street, which enters frame from the lower right edge and stretches back towards center. A lamppost stands along the right edge. Behind and to the left of Mertie, the iron fencing of Copp's Hill Burying Ground is barely visible. Further down Hull Street, buildings line both sides of the street. In the near distance at center, Old North Church stands in partial view at the foot of Hull Street. Its front tower rises, facing towards camera. A clock face is inset into the steeple's tower. It is capped by the steeple's lantern and spire. A hazy, white film glazes over the majority of the image. Text from negative sleeve: 2374.
