The heavily guarded 200-inch telescope mirror arrived on a custom built freight car from Corning, New York to Southern California where it will be housed at the California Institute of Technology. This photograph is possibly related to the article, “Train Crew Nervous Carrying Giant Lens,” Los Angeles Times, 10 Apr. 1936: 1, 2. Text from negative sleeve: 4793 --- Left to right are Nat Hudson, Dr. F. G. Pease, associate in optics as Caltech; Fred Phillips, chief special railroad detective, who had four assistants to guide the train; P. A. Podlech, freight-master who supervised the routing of the train; and H. A. Sugar. The train was examined by the detectives after every stop and guarded day and night against vandalism by hobos or cranks. Times photo.
