Description
Participants in Sacramento’s Days of ’49 festivities are shown dressed in period clothing in May 1922. Two costumed gentleman stand poised in an automobile, while several costumed participants walk by. Designed to recreate the Gold Rush of Sacramento, the event was the brainchild of Sacramento Chamber of Commerce official Arthur S. Dudley. Standing to the right in the car is a “Whiskerino,” a name given to those who grew out their beards and mustaches to better simulate the Gold Rush revival. In the days following the event, it was estimated that the Days of ’49 yielded Sacramento the equivalent of $1 million in nationwide publicity and advertising.
