Photograph caption dated February 9, 1964 reads, "Jim Houtz dives 284 feet into Devil's Hole to find bottom of seemingly bottomless pit near Death Valley junction." Devil's Hole is a volcanic fault at the base of a mountain on the eastern edge of Death Valley. Access to the hole requires climbing down a 100-foot sheer wall.
