Charles Handy article exploring how the changing nature of work and career will lead to a new assessment of the value of those in the retirement age bracket. Handy begins the article discussing how what Peter Laslett calls the Third Age, the stage of life between the end of full-time employment/parenting and the retirement age, has always existed, but is now, due to rapidly changing demography, becoming the focus for many organization and business scholars. Handy predicts that this increasing population will be well-off and independent, and activities like shopping will become a cherished pastime. With the increasing use of part-time work as a means to socialize and earn extra money, those in the Third Age will begin developing portfolio work lives. Handy goes on to note that those who will be entering the Third Age are still, for now, in the Second Age of working in and for organizations, and must start preparing for the inevitable changes that the Third Age will bring.
