Description
Photograph of a crane constructing the breakwater in San Pedro, ca.1900. The crane is at the left side of the image, although its long arm reaches to the right side. The crane is railcar mounted, and rests on tracks supported by wooden beams on the stones of the breakwater. There is man standing to the right of the crane, guiding its payload, which is obscured by the breakwater itself. There is the edge of a hill in the background. Preliminary work on the breakwater began in 1898, and it cost approximately $3 million.
