Description
Collection of 207 glass plate negatives dating to the early 1900s. They appear to have been taken by the same photographer, and include many casual family shots, as well as landscapes around the Monterey area and several from Santa Clara County. The only clue to their provenance is the name Alice Wheeler written on the bottom of one of the dry plate boxes. A member of the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County conducted research through ancestry.com and presented his findings (these have not been confirmed): Alice Wheeler was born in Vermont in 1890 Her parents were farmer Francis (Frank dob 1850) and Lilla Page Wheeler (dob 1855) of Vermont. They were married in Morgan, Vermont, on February 17, 1873. During the 1900 Federal Census, ten year old Alice is living within the family household along with an older brother, Claude (23), and an older sister, Nellie (21), along with two boarders. During the 1910 Federal Census, twenty year old Alice was still living in San Jose on Alum Rock Avenue (near Porter and Miguelito). Alice was professionally declared to be a music teacher. Her older siblings are no longer living in the family household. By 1920, she is described as Alice Foster, married to Frank R. Foster (originally of Illinois), and the couple were living on their own farm located on Noble Ave in San Jose. The wedding had taken place at the First Congregational Church of San Jose. The wedding took place December 1, 1915. The couple had a son at this time (1920), Charles L Foster, age three and a daughter, Margaret, seven months old. Frank has declared his occupation to be a fruit farmer (as well did many of his Noble Avenue neighbors at this time. His rural "census neighbors" were the Joseph A. and Leana Berryessa Family). Lilla Orphena Page Wheeler passed away on July 16, 1934 in San Jose, CA at the age of 79. City records show her living in 1931 at 306 So. 15th Street, San Jose, CA. Alice's father, Frank Sumner Wheeler, is not found in the 1920 census and it is noted Lilla has been declared to be a widow. Frank passed away in early 1915 in San Jose. A funeral notice could not be found; however, legal notices for his creditors were published circa June 1915 and directed by his wife's lawyer, L. D. Bohnett. The 1930 Federal Census for the Frank and Alice Wheeler family show the couple having had an additional child, Dorothy, age 5, living with her two older siblings, Charles and Margaret. Alice passed away in San Jose on November 6, 1971 at the age of 81. Their oldest child, Charles Lauren Foster, died in Cresswell, Oregon on January 30, 1999, at the age of 83. Their second eldest child, Margaret Louise, took on the last name of Campbell, and passed away in Mukilteo, Washington on November 4, 2011. Her obituary read: Margaret grew up on an apricot ranch in San Jose and loved the outdoors and camping. She attended San Jose State College and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in primary teaching. She then taught Kindergarten at the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in northern California. By Christmas of 1942 she was back in San Jose, because of illness, where she was proposed to by Glenn Campbell (1913-1991). They married January 17, 1943. Margaret was a fantastic homemaker, raising her family in San Jose. She also volunteered with the YWCA, the Altruists and Campfire Girls. She moved to Everett in May 2003. Born with a GO bug, Margaret loved exploring the wonders of the Pacific Northwest with the Garden Court Retirement Community! She never lost her love of life, people and the great outdoors. Though now with the Lord, Margaret's final resting place will be alongside Glenn Campbell, her husband of 48 years, at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, California."
