Photograph caption dated March 24, 1964 reads, "Eli, a 3-year-old orangutan, was the key figure yesterday in groundbreaking for the Children's Zoo, first unit of the new Los Angeles Zoo at Griffith Park. Lending a hand despite rain are, left to right, Steve Ramseyer, 7; David Stubbs, 5, and Barbara Shepard, 7, all of Woodland Hills. Barbara is the daughter of Councilman Thomas D. Shepard."
