This is a photograph of Fr. Kupfer riding a white horse, just before vacation at Wuchow [now Wuzhou] Mission. Born in New York, Bishop Kupfer came to Maryknoll in 1928 after graduating from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained at Maryknoll in 1933. After ordination he was assigned to Wuchow, South China. He began what was to be a 14 year period of missionary work in this diocese. In 1944, while the Japanese army was making inroads in Wuchow, Fr. Kupfer was assigned to the United States. His duties took him to Taichung, Taiwan where he was consecrated a Bishop in 1962. He served there in this capacity until 1986.
