Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes.
Photograph article dated April 30, 1962 partially reads, "Police were full of praise today for R. E. Schumacher, a Lockheed test pilot who flew a two-engine jet past populated areas Saturday and crash-landed it near a Northridge intersection without serious injury. The plane had a power failure as it circled for a landing approach to Burbank Air Terminal. Schumacher, 3118 N. Lamer St., Burbank, was taken to Northridge Receiving Hospital for observation, then released. Also uninjured were Thomas Philips, 48, Great Britain, an employe [sic] of the Bristol Engine Co.; and Albert L. Zibble, 50, a flight mechanic, 9520 Rubio Ave., Sepulveda... The Lockheed jet, en route from Georgia to Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, skidded to rest in a field northwest of Parthenia St. and Corbin Ave., with heavy damage to the plane's undercarriage and nose." Photograph caption reads, "Souvenir hunters converge after Northridge jet crash - Mike Hughes, 9, left, and Arthur Albin, 8, retrieve landing gear parts."
