Photograph was edited for publication purposes The monastic community at Valyermo was founded in China in 1929 by the Abbey of Sint Andries Zevenkerken in Brugge, Belgium. The monks prayed, taught, and worked in China until they were expelled by the communists in 1952. In 1955 the community relocated at Valyermo in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. St. Andrew's Abbey is located at 31001 North Valerymo Road in Valerymo, California. Photograph caption dated October 7, 1961 reads "Library is converted pig sty." The article partially reads "An order of Benedictine monks which salvaged only its life savings and faith from Red China six years ago is slowly rebuilding itself in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains near Pearlblossom."; See images #00126869 through #00126872 for all photos in this series.
