Description
V1p186c In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 186 bottom, Vol. II, page 149 bottom right. These photographs are contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Caption written under photo in Volume I: 'Uncle Sam' escorted by buglars [sic] from the U.S. Army. Recruiting on Market St. in front of Palace Hotel March 23, 1917." Text written under photo in Volume II: "The first Recruiting Team in San Francisco 1916 [sic]." Photo shows man dressed as Uncle Sam holding sign reading "UNCLE SAM NEEDS Your Services.", while a bugler plays and a crowd looks on. Text written to right of photo in Volume I: "This was the very first recruiting done in San Francisco after the U.S. had declared war against Germany. These young men visited all sections of the City including Base Ball games etc, and met with great success in getting recruits."
