Quartz mining at Round Valley started in 1862 by E.W. Judkins and Alex Tate. The Granite Ledge was discovered by John W. Ellis, a mill to crush the ore was erected in the fall of 1862. Quite a village sprang up here D.R. Cate built a sawmill to furnish the lumber to build the village. Business firms were N.C. Cunningham & Co., Miner & Hughes, McQuinna Compton merchants. J.S. Carter, Snyder & Bro. had saloons. C.H. Lawrence, livery stable, one hotel. Town faded away in three years, mines did not pay. Judkins and Kellogg started to mines did not pay. Judkins and kellogg state to mine in Cherokee Ravine, they developed the Kettle Ledge, built and operated a large mill, sold this property to a London Co., in 1871. Nearby was opened the Caledonia quarts mine, H.C. Bidwell and associates, near which sprang up another settlement. Whiting & Co.'s Feather River Express made weekly trips to all of these points bringing letters and papers from Marysville. Round Valley Resevoir furnished water for most of the mines.
