A little stroll of about 20 miles a day is advised by a man who makes the Valley his walking ground. He finds it a cinch to shuffle over a 20-mile routs [sic] in a day. Of course, he could do a lot better in his early days. He is 83 years of age now. He is e. L. Bates of 1857 Grammercy, Hollywood, a former Valley resident." Photograph caption reads, "Scalping knife - E. L. Bates, who likes to walk in the Valley, shows his wife, Laura, scalping knife he carried in days of old west.
