Description
Title in red and black; title and text enclosed within double rule border; Monaldini's woodcut Pegasus device with motto "Perennitas laudis" on title pages. Engravings: added title-page with Jesuit device; the first 14 portraits engraved by Westerhout; the last portrait engraved by Westerhout's pupil Jakob Frey after Pietro Nelli. The 14th portrait is signed: "Antonius Odatij Romanus pinx., Arnoldus van Westerhout sculp." Each plate faces a page of text, Latin and Italian in double columns. Full-page engraved portraits of the first 15 Superior Generals of the Jesuits: St. Ignatius Loyola, Diego Lai?nez, St. Francisco de Borja, Everard Mercurian, Claudio Aquaviva, Muzio Vitelleschi, Vincenzo Carafa, Francesco Piccolomini, Alessandro Gottifredi, Goswin Nickel, Giovanni Paolo Oliva, Charles de Noyelle, Tirso Gonza?lez, Michelangelo Tamburini, and Franz Retz. Half light-brown calf and brown cloth over boards; blue/red sprinkled edges.
