Description
This film reel contains footage of the Hotel del Coronado and surrounding area c.1930s. The footage was captured by the resident group, Coronado Sports and Recreations Inc, headed by Roy Pickford. Coronado Sports and Recreations Inc wanted to produce advertising travelogue-type films of Coronadans participating in sporting events, as well as attractions "within a 14-mile radius of Coronado". Footage contains clips of the exterior of the Hotel Del, including the tennis courts, pool, turret, and courtyard; interior clips including the Crown Room and the Circus Room; clips of surrounding area include footage of the original Coronado Golf Course, Tent City, , and a seaplane and Navy ship. The Rainbow Fleet is also visible, where Bob Carrothers and Jane Ward can be seen playing tennis. The film reel also includes title and intertitle cards that list local tourist destinations in the greater San Diego area. Towards the end of the reel the Bonham Boy's Band can be seen preparing for the reception for the 50th Anniversary of the Hotel Del Coronado in 1938. The Hotel del Coronado is a historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, California built in 1888. When it opened, it was the largest resort hotel in the world. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities and has been recognized as a luxury destination through the years. The building of the hotel was directly tied to the development of the island of Coronado, which incorporated into a city separate from San Diego in 1890
