Typed copy of excerpts from the diary of Sallie P. Hester (1835-1911), "Crossing the Plains in '49", entries from April 1850 through October 5, 1871, taken from pages 378-383 of Frederick Hall's History of San Jose from 1871. Sallie P. Hester married James K. Maddock on October 5, 1870. Sallie was the daughter of Craven P. Hester a district attorney and later district judge. This excerpt is also published in separate volumes of the Argonaut from September 1 through October 24, 1925 and in the book Covered Wagon Women: Diaries & Letters from the Western Trails, 1840-1849.
