In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions. Photograph caption dated October 24, 1959 reads "Mrs. Jack E. Neumann holds tray of tiaras as Mrs. D. Ross Lederman places one on the head of Mrs. Joan Castle Joseff as she tries to decide which one to wear with her ball gown Nov. 7 when members of WAIF present their annual Imperial-WAIF Ball at the Cocoanut Grove of the Ambassador Hotel."
