Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Schaefer Air Service was the first FAA-certified air ambulance service in the United States. Part of the Schaefer Ambulance Service, it was founded by J. Walter Schaefer in 1947, in Los Angeles. Photograph caption dated March 27, 1956 reads "Mercy flight begins. Emergency call sends pilot Ted Sanderson and nurse Louella Schaefer scurrying to plane with medical flight kit and other equipment. Operation of service is strictly limited to transportation of sick and injured."; See images #00144378 through #00144381 for all photos in this series.
