Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph article dated December 20, 1960 partially reads, "'Commercial' has become a nasty word... especially if it describes some Christmas pursuit. And yet, in the field of fine arts it is refreshing to hear this adjective used, because as a rule the 'creator' is so wrapped up in his work... so involved in expressing his own ego... he loses sight of what might be appreciated and enjoyed... and purchased by others. Consequently, he barely ekes out a living and spends his life eating beans and cold cuts in a cellar or attic. But, not so Blanche Douglas Byles of Granada Hills who has been composing... and having published... choral music for over 30 years. 'I'm a very practical woman,' claims Mrs. Byles. 'It is stupid to deny that there are such things as 'commercial angles' or 'sales appeal!' 'My field is very crowded... most competitive; actually, it's a miracle I've been published at all.'" Pictures is Blanche Douglas Byles, choral composer.
