Description
This nighttime photograph of one of Sacramento’s most recognizable landmarks, the Tower Bridge, was taken in 1940. The Capitol dome, on the left side of the picture, has been superimposed. The earliest official support for a replacement for the 20-year-old M Street Bridge came in January 1929, when the Highway Committee of the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution to do so. By October 1931, the California State Highway Commission went on record, unanimously supporting a new span at M Street, and in May 1933, the State Legislature approved funding for construction. By late July 1934, ground was broken on the new bridge. It was unveiled on December 15, 1935, with 1,000 homing pigeons from around the state being released to return to their homes with word of the structure’s opening. One other function to celebrate the opening was a San Francisco Bay to Capital cruiser race.
